Dr. Lowell graduated from Cornell University with a BS in Biology and entered a DVM –MS program at the University of Missouri. After graduation in 1981, he worked in an exclusive equine practice specializing in racetrack medicine and brood mare care in Omaha, Nebraska. He moved to Reno in 1983 and established Bonde Lane Animal Hospital, specializing in small animal and equine care. After developing his traditional veterinary skills over a period of twelve years, he became interested in equine chiropractic therapy after he observed the results a human chiropractor had on one of his lame patients. Like all good practitioners, he was very interested in any form of medicine that was an effective treatment modality.
He entered a course developed by Sharon Willoughby, the founder of the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA). Dr. Willoughby, a veterinarian with a dual degree in human chiropractic medicine, is thought by many to be the founder of veterinary chiropractic in the United States today. Dr. Lowell was certified by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association in 1997. Dr. Lowell was amazed with the results he achieved with chiropractic adjustments. Many of the veterinarians enrolled with him during his instruction from the ACVA were already certified acupuncturists with the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS). Acupuncture became a natural extension of his love for chiropractic, and he soon learned that acupuncture was effective for pain control and for many other disease conditions that are frequently treated by veterinarians. Acupuncture for arthritis, liver disease, kidney disease, intervertebral disc disease, and cancer were incorporated in his treatment regimes. He was certified with the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society in 1998.
After receiving his IVAS certification, herbal therapies were added to his alternative arsenal of treatment regimes. He was certified through the Healing Oasis Wellness Clinic in 1999. The basis for the use of Chinese herbals is the same as the basis for acupuncture treatments, namely tongue and pulse diagnosis. Dr. Lowell was amazed at the amount of information that could be deduced simply from understanding different pulse qualities, and equally amazed with the efficacy and safety of herbal therapies when correctly used. In 1998, he sold his practice and established Holistic Pet Care, a new practice specializing in alternative medicine. Acupuncture, chiropractic, and herbal therapies are emphasized and incorporated w/ traditional veterinary medicine. Dr. Lowell was involved in the development of the Acupuncture and Chiropractic programs at Colorado State University, acting as a Teaching Assistant and guest lecturer from 2000 through 2003. He also made several presentations at veterinary conferences as a speaker on Alternative Medicine.
Sarah Kalivoda was born in Topeka, Kansas. Soon thereafter, her family moved to Jones, Oklahoma where she was raised on a ranch. At the age of 3, her love of animals began... she started showing horses competitively throughout the Midwest eventually winning 8th in the World! During her high school years, her family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where Dr. Sarah attended Advance Technologies Academy, focusing on architecture (a second passion). After high school, she realized her true calling was still veterinary medicine. She then completed her Bachelors in Animal science with Honors at the University of Nevada, Reno in 2006.
She was heavily involved in extra-curricular activities including being an Ambassador for the University and helping create an Animal Science Business Fraternity. She then went on the graduate from Oklahoma state University with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. Soon following, she traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico to complete her internship in 2011, which included focus in soft tissue surgery, emergency, oncology, ophthalmology and internal medicine. In 2016, Dr. Kalivoda became certified in Acupuncture by the International Acupuncture Veterinary Society (IVES). In addition, she is trained in ozone therapy, spinal motioning, prolozone, and gold bead therapy and is actively being certified in Chinese herbals by IVES. She is excited to be able to provide a wide array of natural solutions for her patient's health.
Dr. Sarah is heavily involved with rescue organizations and her happiest moments are when homeless animals find loving homes.
Her love for mountains, skiing and the beautiful landscape that Reno/Tahoe has to offer, led Dr. Sarah to return to the regions to practice veterinary medicine in 2011. She recently joined Mountain View Animal Hospital for its distinctive and integrative medicine practices, calming atmosphere, and its determination for the highest standards in patient and client care.
Dr. Sarah's happy furry family includes her four dogs Tioga, Choppy, Tulip and Mango (one Labrador and three Chihuahuas) and her two cats, Lucille and Cornel Cornbread. She splits her time between her devotion to her job and spending time with loved ones traveling and enjoying the outdoors.
As a graduate of the University of Minnesota, she moved to Nevada in 1986 from Wisconsin. Her spare time goes to volunteering with the Story County Fire Protection District. The companions in her life include 3 cats, Rowdy, Mittens and Porter, as well as a Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Diana.
