Herbals are safe and have few side effects; an occasional animal may have digestive issues which are resolved quickly when the herbs are withdrawn. Herbal medications often are used to prevent side effects if Western medications are needed to treat a medical condition. Herbals enhance the effects of acupuncture, allowing the patient to be seen less frequently. Analysis of the tongue and pulse, as in acupuncture evaluation, as well as clinical signs present determine the herb to be used. Finally, the use of herbal therapies does not require frequent blood enzyme evaluations because their toxicity is so low. Western medications may have serious side effects and may require blood work at frequent intervals to ensure your pet is tolerating them well.

Herbal therapies have been used by Asian cultures for centuries as a first line of defense against illness. Even today, herbal apothecaries abound in China and are used by the population to address everyday maladies such as digestion issues, viral issues, arthritis, emotional issues. More advanced modalities such as acupuncture and Western therapies are sought if resolution of the primary complaint is not achieved.
