At Mountain View Animal Hospital & Holistic Pet Care, acupuncture is used to treat virtually every condition. All medical conditions are a result of imbalances that exist within the body. Depending upon the animal, the imbalances manifest as different clinical signs. It might be allergies, arthritis, urinary tract infections, liver disease, kidney disease, immune mediated disease, and even cancer. While western medicine is effective at treating various symptoms, frequently the underlying cause is not addressed. This creates a situation where disease becomes recurrent and chronic. Some examples of this are chronic ear infections, chronic allergies, chronic liver or kidney enzyme elevations, epileptic seizures, and chronic pain syndromes.
How does Acupuncture work?
When a needle is placed in an acupuncture point, the nervous system is activated. A message is sent to the spinal cord, and predictable responses occur. Nervous system stimulation then produces hormonal, neurological, and blood flow changes that affect the desired area of the body or target organ. It is in this fashion that the underlying cause of the pathology is addressed.
Acupuncture can be performed in three different ways. The first is called dry needle therapy. A sterile stainless steel needle is inserted into acupuncture points, causing a predictable physiologic response. A second type of acupuncture involves connecting a TENS electrostimulation unit to the inserted acupuncture needles. This creates a stronger stimulation of the acupuncture point than simple needle insertion would. The third type of acupuncture is called “aquapuncture.” A solution of homeopathic B12, saline and other compounds are injected into individual acupuncture points. The effects of this type of acupuncture can be increased and long lasting. The individual medical condition and the patient determine which of the above mentioned techniques are employed by the doctor.
Acupuncture can be used as a curative modality by itself, as documented by its use in intervertebral disc disease or liver disease. It can also be used in conjunction with herbal therapies in almost every clinical situation, ranging from arthritis, allergies, seizures, digestive disorders to name just a few. Finally, acupuncture can be used to decrease side effects associated with western medications that are used chronically. At Mountain View Animal Hospital & Holistic Pet Care, we strive to customize the treatment protocols based upon the age and phase of life your pet is in, the desires of the owners, the recommendations of the referring Veterinarian, and the disease condition itself.
