Meet Jaqueline: Jaqueline is our lead kennel attendant and an avid animal lover, who finds sharks fascinating and might actually be one considering how well she can swim. As I made my way to our boarding and day care area to speak with Jaqueline as soon as I stepped inside I was immediately mobbed by a pack of 10 or so dogs licking my face and jumping around, this moment of bliss was just a glimpse of what happens to Jaqueline on a daily basis.
Q: What made you get into this line of work?
A: I would say my genuine love for animals and want to be around them constantly, (laughing) and it’s definitely easier than people because dealing with people can be quite a lot sometimes. But I would that I do it because I just love animals and want to make sure that they are cared for properly.
Q: How long have you been doing this type of work?
A: I started volunteering as an assistant at the humane society when I was in high school, so I’ve been doing this off and on since I was 16, which is a long time since I’m 29 so I’ve been doing this for about 13 years.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I don’t think I can single out just one thing I love everything about what I do, I love being with the dogs and the cats and all of the animals that we see here. I love taking care of them and I love learning something I feel like I learn something new everyday. Especially I didn’t know much about holistic pet care and it’s great to be able to see and learn more about that everyday.
Q: What is a typical day for you what do you do?
A: We have day care and boarding, we run day care all day that’s with all of the dogs running around and playing in the yard and I just make sure to watch and observe them. And we have the boarding animals where we take care of them with feedings, medicating, making sure they are healthy anything like that. But mostly it’s just hanging around with dogs and cats all day observing them and making sure that they are all getting along and keeping them happy, healthy and safe.
Q: So your job is to hang out and play with the animals all day, how cool is that?
A: Very cool that is definitely the best part if you’re feeling down just go and hug a dog and you’ll feel better.
Q: This question might be the hardest but who’s your favorite?
A: I have a few favorites but my number one favorite would probably be this black and white great dane that comes in, his name is Kona and he kinda looks like a cow but he’s very sweet and very gentle and easy to get along with.
Q: Now just tell me anything about you?
A: I really like photography, and I’m a competitive open water swimmer which is swimming in like the ocean or Lake Tahoe and I’ve been doing it since high school.
Q: Do you win?
A: (laughing) It depends on how big the race is to be honest, and what category that you’re in but I’ve come close a couple of times which is really good when you’re competing against like 150 people getting in the top 10 or 20 is considered a win.
Q: What is your dream pet?
A: My dream pet would be a horse and my dad had a horse named shadow but I always thought his name should be feather, so my dream pet would be a horse named feather.
Q: If you could be any animal what would you be?
A: I would be a great white shark I love sharks they’re my favorite, so I would love to be a great white shark and just do my own shark thing.
