What To Expect During a Preventative Dental Screening

A preventative dental exam for your pet is not that different from what you might experience at your own routine dental check-up. Our veterinarian will perform a physical examination of your pet’s teeth, gums, tongue, and other oral structures to look for any signs of common dental issues, including:

  • Dental disease
  • Damaged or chipped teeth
  • Abscesses
  • Infection
  • Poor bite alignment
  • Cancer
  • Pain or discomfort

If your vet notices any problems, they will discuss your pet’s treatment options with you and recommend a plan to help get your pet back to optimal dental health. When you visit our office, you can expect a thorough preventative oral screening tailored to your pet’s specific needs.

Preventative Non-Anesthetized Teeth Cleanings and Assessments (PTCA)

At Mountain View Animal Hospital & Holistic Pet Care, we are proud to partner with Animal Dental Care to provide Preventative Non-Anesthetized Teeth Cleanings and Assessments (PTCAs) to help your pet maintain quality dental care between their regular comprehensive oral health assessment and treatments. These non-anesthetized cleanings are ideal for any dog or cat who does not have advanced dental disease, as they help minimize the build-up of bacteria in your pet’s mouth through frequent teeth cleanings.

  • During your pet’s PTCA, our partner technician will perform the following:
  • Assessment: an oral cavity palpation and probing each tooth
  • Custom Patient Chart: noting visible abnormalities and/or concerns
  • Cleaning: Scaling and Curettage
  • Polishing: Non-fluoride based polish, smoothing out minor flaws
  • Brushing & Oral Rinse: Removing and rinsing excess debris
  • Education: A review of your pet’s experience along with a recommended treatment plan

The Preventative Oral Exam and cleaning performed on your pet at Mountain View Animal Hospital & Holistic Pet Care is considered to be a Teeth Cleaning procedure and is not recognized to be a complete Dental Prophylaxis as determined by the American Veterinary Medical Association. A complete dental prophylaxis consists of radiography of the roots of the teeth, and an extensive cleaning comprised of subgingival scraping and examination, as well as scaling and polishing of the teeth. This is performed under general anesthesia and may require full blood panels. Current veterinary protocol is for this procedure to be performed annually.
